Narrative Theories – Blue Velvet

I think that the film ‘Blue Velvet’ follows the equilibrium theory.

By starting the film with flowers suggests to the audience that the film follows the equilibrium theory because it starts with a calm first opening scene, looking natural and tranquil.

The scene is set and it shows people (in the scene children) going around their daily life and everything seems normal to the audience.

Also in the scene, it shows one of the main characters going on about his daily life in the garden, doing (possibly) what he enjoys doing

In the following scene, it shows something happening to one of the main characters, and it is clear to the audience that it is not good, and that he is in trouble and/or at risk, following one of the main parts of the equilibrium theory.

One of the last shots in the opening scenes goes underground, revealing something dark to the audience, which also shows the equilibrium theory as it shows the film starting off all calm and peaceful and things gradually getting worse, and waiting for the main character to solve the problem that has occurred.
