Analysis of Opening Sequence

Gone Girl

In the opening sequence of the film 'Gone Girl' (2014), one of the first editing techniques is extreme close ups of a note pad, used as a diary, and of the main character writing in the diary, however, the audience can only see parts of what she is writing, to give a sense of mystery to the audience, Also, another editing technique is jump cuts from one scene where she is writing to the side, jumping to a shot of a birds eye view.
The use of light music is to signal to the audience that something will be happening to the character who is being featured, usually being the main character. By doing this, it creates a light airy sensation of peace and harmony which could conflict with the characters (psychological) health, with all seeming peaceful. This is essentially demonstrating the calm before the storm.
Another technique that is used would be having a extreme close up of the pens that are being used and having a blurred background. By doing this, it creates an eerie feeling and the sense of the unknown.
