The three narrative theories that the audience can follow include:
Equilibrium theory - Todorov
The equilibrium theory shows the audience that everything is calm, with things starting to go wrong, with a hero to save the day. An example of a film that demonstrates the equilibrium theory is 'The Hunger Games'
Binary opposites - Levi-strauss
Binary opposites have two exact opposites, for example, good vs bad, the living vs the dead, male vs female, old vs young or black vs white. Examples of binary opposites can include 'P.S I love you' and 'Spiderman'.
'P.S I love you' falls under binary opposites because it is the living and the dead, as well as a main male and main female character
'Spiderman' also falls under binary opposites because it is the hero vs the villain
Enigma code:
The enigma code is a mystery which is set up at the start of the film for the audience. Examples of the enigma code include 'The Imitation Game' and 'Enigma".
Our opening sequence falls under the enigma code as the audience is unaware what is happening to one of the main characters in the first scenes, building the mystery for the audience to solve.
