Jack Reacher- Editing Techniques
1. Normal cuts- This editing technique helps to create the Thriller genre because it gives the idea of a sense that the film has a certain pace to it which would usually suggest a thriller.
2. Cross cutting- This type of editing technique implies that there is something else going on in the film that is more important than the current event. This suggests the Thriller genre because there is usually something that needs to be found out in a Thriller which makes it interesting.
3. L-Cut- This technique helps to create the Thriller genre because it helps the film to flow more which means that it shows that all the ideas in the film interlink.
4. Invisible cut- This editing technique helps to create the Thriller genre because it hides the idea that there is any difference in what is happening which keeps the viewer focused on what is actually happening in the scene rather than them being focused on the cuts. Maintaining tension etc.
5. Jump cuts- This helps to present the Thriller genre because it shows the viewer that the film is fast paced and can also represent the passing of time. Which implies that it is going to be interesting. Thriller's are usually fast paced to maintain tension and build ideas.
The opening sequence of Jack Reacher contains a number of the editing techniques mentioned above. For example, in the first few moments of the sequence after it has panned upwards it goes to a jump cut. This jump cut maintains the focus of the viewer and builds interest as jump cuts are often unpredictable.
Theory:
I think this film follows the enigma code as there is man walking around with a hood up and it is unknown what his connection is to the events
