Themes:

Psychological thrillers usually show the themes of  death, perception, having an identity or purpose, identity and reality. Characters can usually battle with their own minds, creating tension and fear for the audience. The fact that the character is having to battle with their own mind is what creates the build up of a psychological thriller.
Also, the mental state usually affects the characters thoughts, perceptions and the lack of ability to grasp reality.
