Pro's and Con's of narrative theories

Levi Strauss - Binary Opposites:

Good/Bad, Male/Female, Young/Old, Black/White are all binary opposites, as they are exact opposites.

PROS
- They are basic for the audience to follow

CONS
- They run the possibility of being too basic for the audience to follow

Todorov - Equilibrium theory

When following the equilibrium theory, everything starts in harmony and calm, they there is disruption, and it is up to the main character to fix the problem. The main character then solves the problem and there is a resolution to the problem.


PROS
- It is easy for the audience to follow
- It sets up the film and deceives the audience


CONS
- It runs the possibility of giving too much away
- It can be too predictable

Barthes - Enigma code
A mystery is set up for the audience to follow

PROS
- Using the enigma code, it draws in the audience

CONS
- The audience may have to really follow the film to understand the mystery
- The audience have to read the signs
